Program Furthers Firm’s Goal of Promoting Diversity in Intellectual Property Law
CHICAGO, IL – Feb. 4, 2009 – As part of its ongoing commitment to foster diversity at the firm and in the field of intellectual property law, McAndrews, Held & Malloy is proud to announce that Dr. Malaika Durham Tyson, a first-year law student at the University of Chicago Law School, is the recipient of the 2009 McAndrews Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship.
Durham Tyson, who has a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Purdue University and a Master of Juridical Studies with a focus on intellectual property and technology law from Washington University Law School in St. Louis, was selected from an applicant pool of highly qualified and talented candidates from law schools throughout the country.
The Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship includes a $5,000 stipend for law school tuition and expenses, as well as a paid summer clerkship at McAndrews. The fellowship is open to all diverse first-year law students who are currently enrolled at an ABA-accredited law school and have at least a bachelor’s degree in science or engineering. Applicants submit a personal statement explaining why they wish to pursue a career in IP law, why they are interested in the McAndrews firm as a place to work, and how their background and/or life experiences would improve diversity in the field of intellectual property law. While the Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship is awarded to only one applicant each year, all fellowship applicants are considered for employment in McAndrews’ Summer Clerkship program, which annually attracts some of the most promising IP-focused law students in the nation.
“We are thrilled to have Dr. Tyson join our firm this summer,” said Sharon A. Hwang, a McAndrews shareholder and senior member of the firm’s Diversity Committee. “Dr. Tyson’s academic record, work experience and commitment to patent law stood out in a field of very impressive fellowship candidates.”
