Professional Experience
Deborah A. Laughton has experience in a wide range of intellectual property areas, with an emphasis on patent litigation. She has particular litigation experience in the field of medical devices, including such diverse technologies as orthopedic implants and components, surgical suction irrigators, pediatric hospital beds, nerve imaging technology, and medical image capture systems. She has been involved with drafting opinions, due diligence investigations, and appeals before the Federal Circuit. She is a member of the bars of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and Western District of Michigan. She also is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Before joining McAndrews Held & Malloy, Deborah worked as a nuclear engineer in ComEd’s (now Exelon) Nuclear Fuel Management group. In this role she managed and coordinated a multi-disciplinary team of internal and external resources to provide the licensing and analyses for refueling six of Exelon’s nuclear reactors. She also coordinated the preparation of documents for Nuclear Regulatory Commission approval including license amendments and Updated Final Safety Analysis Report revisions. Her undergraduate engineering honors include being named an Institute of Nuclear Power Operations Scholar as well as a member of the Alpha Nu Sigma, nuclear engineering honorarium.
Deborah remains involved in the engineering profession by serving on the University of Illinois Nuclear, Plasma & Radiological Engineering Advisory Board as well as being a member of the National and Chicago Section Branches of the American Nuclear Society (ANS). She has held positions on the Chicago ANS executive board and on the national ANS committees for Public Policy, Professional Women in ANS and Scholarship Policy and Development.
