Professional Experience
Ed Mas' trial and appellate litigation practice focuses on intellectual property and technology-related disputes. His practice also includes client counseling, licensing, clearance opinions, and patent and trademark prosecution and portfolio management. In litigation, Mr. Mas has served as lead or co-counsel and has handled all aspects of discovery, written and argued dispositive motions, conducted Markman hearings, and participated in multi-week trials and arbitrations. A list of representative cases is provided below. Mr. Mas also has briefed and argued appeals successfully before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. See, e.g., Advanced Cardiovascular Systems, Inc. (“ACS”) v. Medtronic, Inc., 265 F.3d 1294 (Fed. Cir. 2001); SciMed Life Systems, Inc. v. ACS, 242 F.3d 1337 (Fed. Cir. 2001) (affirming non-infringement finding where accused products had sales exceeding $1 billion). Mr. Mas has been selected by his peers in Illinois as a "Leading Lawyer" in Intellectual Property Law.
Mr. Mas' experience encompasses a broad spectrum of technologies, with a special emphasis on medical devices. For example, he has represented Guidant Corporation and ACS in several disputes involving angioplasty catheters and stent systems in U.S. courts and various foreign tribunals. See, e.g., ACS v. Medtronic, Inc., 81 F. Supp. 2d 978 (N.D. Cal. 1999); ACS v. SciMed Life Systems, Inc., 63 F. Supp. 2d 1064 (N.D. Cal. 1999). Along with Tim Malloy, Mr. Mas secured a $166 million victory for ACS, which was the third-largest patent damages award in 2002 and rates among the top patent damages awards of all time. ACS v. Medtronic AVE, Inc., C.A. No. 99-5393 (N.D. Cal. May 23, 2002).
Mr. Mas received his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He was a member of Penn’s national moot court team, earning an award for outstanding trial advocacy.
Mr. Mas received his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Northwestern University, where he attended on a Chick Evans Scholarship. While attending Northwestern, Ed worked as a co-op engineer at the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors Corporation. He later held the position of design engineer at General Motors.
Mr. Mas is a member of several bar associations including the American Bar Association, Illinois Bar Association and American Intellectual Property Law Association.
He has lectured on the subject of patent law and licensing at the Annual Meeting of the Licensing Executives Society and been quoted in the IP Case Law Reporter.
