Professional Experience
Herb Hart maintains a full-service intellectual property practice, representing clients ranging from start-ups to multinationals in the pharmaceutical, medical device, petroleum, chemical, agribusiness, information technology, and aerospace industries.  He has developed special expertise in patent interference matters (principally in life science and chemical technologies), in trademark matters, and in patent and trademark portfolio strategy and management.

Herb is particularly recognized for his expertise in patent interference matters, and he has served as an expert witness on interference law and practice.  His work in this area has been broad-ranging, including managing and litigating interference proceedings, counseling clients on strategies for provoking interferences, and defending patents against attack.

Herb is widely published in the field of intellectual property law and has authored numerous articles and provided expert commentary on the law in legal, business, and scientific publications.  He has frequently spoken on patent law issues at local and national bar association conferences, at national meetings of the American Chemical Society, and at US Department of Commerce export seminars.

In addition, Herb is one of a small number of attorneys recognized by clients and by peers in both Euromoney’s "Guide to the World's Leading Patent Law Experts" and in its "Guide to the World's Leading Trademark Law Practitioners"), as well as in Law Bulletin Publishing Company’s guide to “Leading Lawyers in Intellectual Property Law”, and in the American Research Corporation's "Guide to Leading Illinois Attorneys Practicing in Intellectual Property Law & Computer Law."

He is a member of the American Bar Association (Member 2007 – 2011 IPL Annual Review Board; Co-Chair 2006 Vice-Chair 2005, IPL Committee 104 - Patent Inter Partes Proceedings); American Intellectual Property Law Association (Interference Committee - Vice Chair 2008-2009); Intellectual Property Owners (IPO) Patent Interferences Committee; Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago; Federal Circuit Bar Association; International Trademark Association (Firm Representative); International Trade Commission Trial Lawyers Association; American Chemical Society; Marques (Firm Representative), and the Patent Interferences Committee of the Intellectual Property Owners (2002 – present).
