Professional Experience
James (Jay) R. Nuttall is recognized as one of the top intellectual property litigators in Chicago, including being named one of the 2007 "40 Illinois Attorneys Under 40" to watch.  Nuttall's peers attribute his success to his quick thinking, his effective and respectful cross-examination of witnesses, his ability to articulate complex legal and technical issues, and his honesty and dedication.  Jay has successfully served as lead and co-counsel on several major patent infringement cases, including successfully trying a complex 11-patent case, obtaining a jury verdict for one of the 15 largest patent damages awards in history, obtaining one of the largest attorneys' fees awards in a patent case, and successfully defending a patent infringement claim for more than $100 million.  Jay has handled every aspect of major patent litigation including pre-filing investigation and strategy, discovery, claim construction procedures, motion practice, trial and appellate practice.  Jay has experience with a wide variety of technologies including medical devices, polymer chemistry, chemical processes, networked casino gaming devices, light fixtures, paper machines, sporting goods, concrete conveying systems, food and medical packaging, and many other fields.

Jay has also counseled clients in the evaluation, protection and procurement of intellectual property rights.  Jay’s counseling experience includes the development of worldwide patent protection, intellectual property due diligence investigations, and patent and trademark clearance opinions.

Prior to law school, Jay worked for Baxter, an international health care supply company, where his responsibilities included the design, manufacture, and testing of medical drug delivery devices.

Jay is an active participant in the Northern District of Illinois Trial Bar’s pro bono program. Jay also serves as a mentor for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of DuPage County.  Jay also serves on the University of Illinois College of Engineering Alumni Board.
