Professional Experience
Dr. O’Connor specializes in all aspects of patent law, including patent prosecution, preparation of validity and infringement opinions, interference practice, and litigation.  Dr. O’Connor has extensive experience in managing global patent portfolios and has advised clients in a variety of Freedom to Operate and due diligence projects in the life sciences field.  His work encompasses a broad spectrum of technologies in the biotechnological, pharmaceutical, and medical device arts including humanized antibodies and their use in treating conditions such as pain, cancer, and neurological diseases; peptide-based therapies for stroke; stem cells and the cell therapy field; therapeutic formulations, including aqueous and non-aqueous compositions; nutraceuticals; coronary stent systems; hematology analyzers and controls; and intensive diabetes management devices.

Dr. O’Connor received his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Colorado. His studies focused on interactions between the central nervous system and the immune system, with emphasis on the role of immune cell products, particularly cytokines, in central nervous system function.  After finishing his graduate work, Dr. O’Connor joined the Molecular and Cellular Pathobiology Program at Children’s Memorial Research Center in Chicago to study the pathophysiology of a common pediatric inflammatory disease.  As an undergraduate at Creighton University, he was awarded a fellowship to study pharmacological and environmental regulation of serotonin receptors in the brain.  His laboratory work involved utilization of various molecular biology techniques, immunoassays, and in vitro cell culture techniques.

Dr. O’Connor is author of 21 peer-reviewed journal articles on cytokine effects in the central nervous system, cytokine gene expression, and viral mediated gene therapy and has presented his work at various national and international scientific meetings.

While in law school, Dr. O’Connor served as a Senior Associate for the Chicago-Kent Law Review and served as a judicial extern for Judge Matthew Kennelly of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
