Professional Experience
Kirk Vander Leest has been working in the field of intellectual property since 1988.  Kirk's practice involves a significant amount of work in connection with patent prosecution, non-infringement/validity opinions and product clearances.  Kirk also has extensive experience in patent litigation and intellectual property due diligence investigations.

Kirk received his engineering degree from Iowa State University in 1987.  Following graduation, Kirk worked as an engineer for Caterpillar, Inc.  In 1988 Kirk became a patent agent in Caterpillar's patent department where his responsibilities included procuring U.S. and foreign patents for Caterpillar's Electrical and Electronics Division.

Kirk received his law degree in 1994 from Chicago Kent College of Law where he graduated with high honors and Order of the Coif.  As a practicing attorney, Kirk has prepared, or supervised the preparation of, numerous patent applications, amendments, opinions and product clearance reports.  Kirk has lead intellectual property due diligence teams in connection with several multi-million dollar acquisitions by a Fortune 100 company.  He has also worked on studies of corporate and competitive patent portfolios, including brain storming meetings to identify future technological direction and protection.  Kirk has also been substantively involved with numerous patent litigations in a variety of technologies.  Kirk also has extensive experience with interference proceedings before the U.S. Patent Office and opposition proceedings before the European Patent Office.
