Professional Experience
Michael B. Harlin has experience in all aspects of patent law, including patent prosecution, licensing, litigation, and opinion preparation. Mike enjoys working with different and complex technologies, and he has represented clients in diverse fields such as regenerative medicine, production and use of therapeutic antibodies and peptides, controlled release pharmaceutical formulations, ophthalmological treatments, medical devices, solid state analytical techniques, and high oleic-acid foods.  Mike has also assisted clients with due diligence efforts in various contexts and with various corporate, antitrust, and regulatory issues.

Mike is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and has prepared numerous patent applications, responses, and appeals.  Mike has also assisted clients with freedom-to-operate analyses and has recently worked on several licensing transactions and due diligence projects involving biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.  Mike has also assisted many corporate clients with establishing intellectual property policies and developing patent portfolios.  

Mike has worked on all aspects of litigation, including depositions, discovery, dispositive motions, trial and appeal.  Mike has been a member of the trial team for several patent trials. He has taken and defended dozens of depositions, including those of technical experts.  Mike has also litigated several patent interference proceedings, gaining substantial experience with both the preliminary motion and priority phases.

Professional Organizations:

Mike is currently the President-elect of the Chicago Intellectual Property Alliance (CIPA), not-for-profit group of corporations, law schools, and law firms that promote education and awareness of intellectual property.  Mike is also a member of CIPA's Science Fair committee.

Mike is on the board of directors for the Yale Club of Chicago.  Mike is also a member of the Licensing Executives Society, the Chicago Bar Association and the American Chemical Society.

Awards & Honors

Mike was honored by the Law Bulletin as one of the "40 Illinois Lawyers Under 40 To Watch" in 2008.
