Professional Experience
Michael is an attorney specializing in the practice of intellectual property law. He began working at McAndrews, Held & Malloy as a Summer Clerk in 2003 and has since gained significant experience in a variety of legal matters.
Michael is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and has prepared and prosecuted patent applications covering a vast array of technologies including fuel cells, noise cancellation earplugs and mechanical devices. Michael has also worked in litigation on a number of patent and trademark cases. Most recently, Michael helped to successfully defend a client’s right to use its trade name by having the opponent’s mark declared generic and obtaining a ruling that no unfair business practices were employed. Additionally, Michael helped secure that client’s litigation expenses by obtaining a ruling that an insurance company was obligated to provide the client with a legal defense.
Michael graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 2005 where he was a member of the Intellectual Property Student’s Association. During law school Michael focused on the study of copyright, trademark and patent law, and participated in workshops to critique advanced studies in the field of intellectual property.
Prior to law school, Michael was employed as an engineer in the automotive industry where he worked on both the design and manufacturing stages of automobile production. Michael served as a representative from a tier I supplier to Ford and General Motors, designing and ensuring the continued manufacturing quality of various automobile fuel and brake systems.
Michael received a Masters of Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan in 2000 in Industrial & Operations Engineering. While studying for his Master’s degree, Michael worked for the University’s Ergonomics department where he studied human reach capabilities. Michael also earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1999, this time in Mechanical Engineering, and graduated cum laude. At Michigan Michael designed and constructed several engineering projects including a keyless home entry system, and a virtual sound application used to determine optimal speaker configurations in an auditorium. While working on both his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Michigan, Michael was a member of the Michigan Men’s Rowing Team where he competed at the highest intercollegiate level for four years and helped lead the team to a top ten national finish.
