Professional Experience
Patricia J. McGrath has experience in all areas of intellectual property law, including litigation, prosecution, and mediation, with particular emphasis on patent litigation. Her practice covers a diverse range of technologies, primarily directed to chemistry. PJ's litigation experience includes trial and appellate work as well as petitioning the U.S. Supreme Court for writ of certiorari. Her experience extends to all aspects of intellectual property litigation, including preparing both pre-trial and post-trial motions and written discovery, witness preparation, deposing and defending witnesses at deposition, presenting motions to the court, and taking direct examination of an expert witness at trial. In addition, PJ assists clients in counseling, licensing, and settlement negotiations and agreements.
PJ attended Chicago-Kent College of Law, where she graduated with High Honors and was a Notes and Comments Editor of the Chicago-Kent Law Review. She is also a member of the Order of the Coif.
PJ holds a bachelor of science degree in biology from St. Xavier University, and a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Elmhurst College, where she graduated with honors. Prior to attending law school, PJ worked as a chemist at Union Carbide and as a technical market specialist at Ashland Chemical. In both positions, she was responsible for technical service and research and development projects for the paint, coatings, ink and adhesive markets. PJ has found that the combination of her dual degrees and technical work experience provide a solid foundation for practicing intellectual property law. She knows first hand how technical people think and communicate in a corporate setting.
