Professional Experience
Paul’s primary focus of practice is intellectual property litigation involving patents, trademarks, trade secrets and unfair competition.  He has worked on cases dealing with an array of technologies including industrial paper machines, cardiac defibrillators, electronic lighting systems, surgical suction-irrigators, lava lamps, and beverage can technology.

Paul has handled most aspects of major patent litigation including conducting pre-filing investigations, participating in strategy sessions, discovery, claim construction procedures, and motion practice.  Recently, Paul served as litigation counsel on a major patent infringement lawsuit, successfully defending against patent claims worth (according to the plaintiff’s expert witness) well over one hundred million dollars over the life of the patent.  The United States District Court based its ruling on both noninfringement and invalidity.  Toward that end, Paul took and defended key depositions, including deposing the plaintiff’s liability expert witness.  He also participated in every other aspect of discovery and in writing the claim construction briefs and the successful summary judgment briefs.

Paul received a Bachelors of Science degree in Physics from Elmhurst College.  While there, Paul was awarded Elmhurst’s Chairperson’s Award for Excellence in Physics.  Paul’s studies included small particle physics, analytical mechanics and thermodynamics.

In law school, Paul participated in Notre Dame’s renowned Trial Advocacy program.  During the mock trial at the end of the program, Paul and his partner succeeded in receiving the only successful jury verdict for a plaintiff’s team out of the six groups with the same case.  Paul also served as the treasurer of Notre Dame’s Intellectual Property Law Society.

Paul also studied economics at Northern Illinois University.  While there, he was a starting defensive end on Northern’s football team.  Paul has remained active in athletics, but in a way that is slightly less destructive to his knees.
