Professional Experience
Since joining the firm in 1989, Steve Hampton's practice has concentrated primarily on advising clients concerning patent and trademark matters, prosecuting patents, and litigating patent and trademark actions.  Steve has had significant responsibility for preparation of both plaintiff’s and defendant’s cases in patent infringement actions in which the damages sought exceeded $100 million.  He has been lead counsel in summary judgment and other pretrial hearings.  He has also prepared appellate briefs and both petitions and oppositions to petitions for certiorari to the Supreme Court.  Steve’s patent related experience includes paper machinery, paving equipment, orthopedic implants, surgical tools, vascular catheters, structural systems, oil drilling equipment, nuclear reactors including fusion energy devices, and drag racing equipment.  

Steve's professional technical experience includes analysis of the human skeleton and skeletal implants, and analysis and design of safety related equipment for commercial nuclear powerplants.  He held the positions of Assistant Professor of Orthopedics at the Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois, and senior engineering specialist at Sargent & Lundy, architect engineers.  He has authored more than twenty technical publications and presentations.

Steve's other legal experience includes the United States Department of Energy, Office of Patent Counsel, where he administered intellectual property provisions of D.O.E. funded contracts and prosecuted patent applications for inventions made at D.O.E. funded laboratories.  Steve is a member of Lawyers for the Creative Arts and has done pro bono work for musicians and artists.
