Professional Experience
Sharon Hwang practices in all areas of intellectual property law with particular emphasis on patent litigation and intellectual property counseling. Her practice spans such diverse technologies as orthopedic implants, implantable defibrillators, drug eluting stents, electro-optical printing systems, surgical navigation systems, drift tube linear accelerators, digital cellular telephones, interactive television systems, and railcar components.
Sharon has extensive experience in federal trial and appellate courts involving patent, trademark, and antitrust claims. She has served as co-counsel in numerous patent infringement lawsuits, handling all aspects of fact and expert discovery, direct and cross-examination of fact and expert witnesses, and pre- and post-trial motion practice. Sharon has successfully briefed and argued dispositive motions that have helped her clients avoid the burden and expense of trial. Sharon has taken primary responsibility for preparing briefs in both the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court, and has successfully argued appeals before the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. Sharon also advises clients on the acquisition and development of intellectual property portfolios.
As a law student, Sharon was the Managing Editor of the Uniform Commercial Code Digest, Boston College's commercial law review. She also provided pro bono legal services to Boston's Chinatown community.
Sharon is the President-Elect of the Asian American Bar Association, and she serves on the Board of Directors of the Chicago Coalition on Women's Initiatives in Law Firms. She currently serves on the firm’s executive recruiting committee and recently spearheaded the launch of the firm's Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship, a Fellowship that promotes diversity in the field of intellectual property law. In 2007, Sharon was selected as one of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association's "Best Lawyers Under 40." She was recently named a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, an honorary organization of attorneys, judges, and law professors whose professional, public, and private careers have demonstrated outstanding dedication to the welfare of their communities and to the highest principles of the legal profession.
