Professional Experience
Shawn is a patent attorney who specializes in a variety of patent law areas.

Shawn began his practice as a patent agent at McAndrews, Held & Malloy in 1998.  He continued practicing as a patent agent while attending law school at Arizona State University.  Shawn graduated from the Arizona State University College of Law in 2002.

Shawn’s practice includes obtaining patent protection for clients by drafting patent applications and prosecuting patent applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.  Shawn also has experience with a variety of patent analysis activities, including claim interpretation, patent infringement analysis and patent validity analysis.  Shawn has further experience in assisting clients with identifying patentable inventions.  Shawn enjoys working with a variety of technologies, including telecommunications, computer hardware and software, user interface technology, digital and analog control, Internet and cable content delivery, power electronics, electric machines, sensor technology, robotics, electromechanical systems, computer simulation, electronic gaming and a number of manufacturing technologies.

Prior to becoming a patent agent, Shawn performed in a variety of engineering roles for Motorola, Inc.  Shawn began his engineering career as an Advanced Manufacturing Engineer with the Motorola Government Electronics Group in 1991.  For the next three years Shawn worked with advanced manufacturing processes, including robotics, automated solder pasting equipment, automated parts placement equipment, vision inspection systems, laser soldering systems, and IR and wave soldering systems.  Shawn also participated in concurrent engineering design-for-manufacturability efforts.  After advanced manufacturing, Shawn spent the following four years as a systems analyst and design engineer for various Motorola entities.  Shawn first served as a firmware engineer and systems analyst on projects for the Motorola Government Electronics Group.  Shawn then moved into the commercial sector, serving as a software engineer for the Motorola Cellular Infrastructure Group, where he designed system software for Motorola’s TDMA and CDMA cellular network apparatus.  Shawn then served as a software/firmware engineer for Motorola’s Cellular Subscriber Sector, where Shawn developed firmware for Motorola’s line of GSM cellular phones.

During graduate school at the University of Wisconsin, Shawn was a member of the Wisconsin Center for Space Automation and Robotics, where he completed his Master’s thesis involving a four degree-of-freedom vector force sensing robotic fingertip for telerobotic and autonomous grasping applications.  Prior to graduate school, Shawn worked as a lab technician for the Wisconsin Electric Machines and Power Electronics Consortium, where he obtained experience with a variety of power electronics and analog/digital control circuitry for power electronics and electric machine applications.
