Professional Experience
For the 12 years prior to joining McAndrews, Held & Malloy, Ltd., Wayne worked on the development of wireless communications systems and the procurement of intellectual property related to cellular phones. He began his career as a Research Engineer in Motorola’s Corporate Research Division and then transferred to position as a Patent Agent for Motorola.
In 1995 along with 3 fellow Motorola Engineers, Wayne helped start the fabless semiconductor company, PrairieComm Inc. Wayne was the Chief Scientist and the primary inventor for PrairieComm during its growth to more than 200 engineers in the US and India. PrairieComm's digital baseband processors have been used in phones sold by Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Siemens, and Motorola. At PrairieComm, Wayne was in charge of Physical Layer Architecture, Modem Development, and Intellectual Property. Wayne developed verification environments for IS-136, GSM, CDMA, and UMTS that enabled the design and conformance validation of all of PrairieComm’s baseband processors and reference design systems. Executable algorithmic models included all physical layer functions, error coding, traffic channels, control channels, vocoders, transmitters, receivers, and multi-path fading. This suite of testbench software improved the development cycle and compliance verification of fixed point DSP and RTL code at all levels of abstraction. Hardware modules that Wayne designed include: a Dual-Mode Fractionally-Spaced Viterbi Equalizer for IS-136 TDMA, a Radio Control Hardware Coprocessor for IS-95 CDMA, a ROM-Based GMSK Transmitter for GSM, a Reduced State Sequence Estimator for EDGE, and a Log-MAP Turbo Decoder for 3GPP UMTS.
Wayne holds twelve patents related to cellular technology and has been involved in the prosecution of more than 100 patent applications. Wayne has also trained engineers in digital communication theory and the patent process. Experience gained by working in all stages of hardware and software development gives Wayne an advantage in determining the most valuable aspects of new technology and identifying alternative solutions where necessary. Given his combined experience with patent prosecution and leading edge technologies in commercial applications, Wayne is able to maximize patent protection and patent value.
