Professional Experience
Yufeng (Ethan) Ma is a partner at McAndrews, Held & Malloy, Ltd. Ethan focuses his practice in the area of intellectual property (IP) law.
Over the years, Ethan has accumulated extensive experience in both IP counseling and litigation for a wide variety of clients. His client base expands from start-ups to Fortune 300 companies in different industries including chemical, petrochemical, telecommunication, information technology, electronics, biotech and pharmaceutical, and consumer products.
Ethan’s IP counseling experience includes overall IP strategy counseling and implementation, patent prosecution and trademark application, patentability opinions, patent infringement assessment opinions, IP due diligence, patent right licensing agreements and counseling on design-around to avoid infringement.
On the litigation side, Ethan has represented both plaintiffs and defendants in a number of IP cases in front of federal courts (including the Eastern District of Texas, Northern District of Illinois, Southern District of New York, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit etc.) and International Trade Commission. Ethan’s most recent ITC experience includes acting as counsel for respondents in the matter of Certain R-134a Coolant (ITC Inv. No. 337-TA-623) and acting as counsel for the complainant in the matter of Certain Cast Steel Railway Wheels, Certain Processes for Manufacturing Or Relating To Same and Certain Products Containing Same (ITC Inv. No. 337-TA-655).
In addition, Ethan has conducted appeals before the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and has been involved in proceedings before the European Patent Office and the State Intellectual Property Office of China.
Prior to Ethan’s legal career in the U.S., he was trained to be an intellectual property lawyer in China and has established extensive relationships with companies, law firms and educational institutions in China over the years. Therefore, Ethan has the advantage of utilizing his cross-board knowledge, experience and network to assist U.S. clients with IP due diligence, applications, enforcement and dispute resolution involving Mainland China, Taiwan, or Hong Kong, and to assist Chinese clients with the same issues involving the U.S. Ethan also constantly provides clients with general legal, culture, and business information on doing business in China.
Ethan graduated from Peking University in Beijing, China with a B.S. in chemistry, and an LL.B. degree in intellectual property law. He received his JD degree and Master in chemistry from Vanderbilt University.
