Professional Experience
Yufeng (Ethan) Ma is a partner at McAndrews, Held & Malloy, Ltd.  Ethan focuses his practice in the area of intellectual property (IP) law.

Over the years, Ethan has accumulated extensive legal experience in both litigation and non-litigation matters.  Ethan has successfully developed a client base ranging from start-ups to Fortune 300 companies in industries including chemicals, petrochemicals, communications, information technology, electronics, biotechnology & pharmaceuticals, industrial products, and consumer products.

Ethan’s experience includes developing and implementing IP strategies, patent prosecution, trademark application, copyright registration, patent infringement and/or validity opinions, IP due diligence, technology license or transfer, and designing around.

On the litigation side, Ethan has represented both plaintiffs and defendants, owners and accused infringers before various federal courts (including the Eastern District of Texas, Southern District of Texas, Northern District of Illinois, Southern District of New York, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit) and the United States International Trade Commission (ITC).  Ethan’s most recent ITC experience includes acting as counsel for four Chinese respondents, which are subsidiaries of Sinochem Corporation, one of the largest companies in China, in the matter of Certain R-134a Coolant (ITC Inv. No. 337-TA-623) and acting as counsel for complainant in the matter of Certain Cast Steel Railway Wheels (ITC Inv. No. 337-TA-655).  In both cases, we help our clients win the ITC’s final determinations.

In addition, Ethan has conducted multiple appeals before the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and has been involved in proceedings before the European Patent Office and the State Intellectual Property Office of China.

Prior to Ethan’s legal career in the U.S., he was trained to be an intellectual property lawyer in China.  Over the years, Ethan has established extensive relationships with companies, state and local government agencies, law firms, and universities in China. Ethan has successfully utilized his unique cross-border knowledge, experience and network to assist U.S. clients with their IP matters involving China, and to assist clients from Mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong with IP due diligence, applications, technology license or transfer, and litigations in the U.S.  Ethan also provides clients with general legal, culture, and business information on doing business in China.
